Refurbishing and integrating the old with the new

The Taunton Academy is a large Secondary school where many of the school buildings have recently been demolished and rebuilt because of condition issues. However, there was insufficient funding to rebuild the whole of the site and so a significant part of the old 1970`s building remained. These buildings were in poor condition, particularly externally, where there were rotten fascias, leaking roofs and old Crittall windows in rotten timber sub-frames.

The challenge

The Academy asked Hookway to advise on funding options and to develop a costed scheme to repair and refurbish the old buildings externally. It was particularly important to the academy that elevational treatments were developed to ensure that the refurbished elevations integrated fully with the recently rebuilt adjacent new buildings.

The solution

Hookway were appointed to prepare a bid for government Condition Improvement Funding for the external refurbishment of the old buildings and the bid was successful. Hookway were appointed as cost consultants and project managers for the project and worked with Glazetek Ltd to produce a curtain walling solution to blend

The result

The academy were delighted with the result. The old building elevations have been updated to match the new buildings, the visual amenity of the buildings has been enhanced and the old and new buildings are integrated. Thermal and acoustic performance has also increased substantially providing a much improved learning environment.
