Funding Applications

Applying for funding such as Capital Grant or CIF, can be a daunting process.  As experts in applying for and securing funding for academies, Hookway can help. We know the system inside out and can wholly manage the process of funding delivery for your school project.

We have a proven track record of securing funding for schools (we achieved a 90% success rate in 2017), and in planning and managing the smooth implementation of building works, as well as overseeing cost effective maintenance programmes. We work on a 'No Win, No Fee' basis: our fee is included in the bid and covers management of the entire project.

Building surveying

We carry out a full range of Building Surveying services for schools and colleges. From acquisition to disposal, our experienced chartered surveyors can support and advise clients at every stage of the property investment cycle, ensuring best value and minimising risk. We currently work with over 90 schools, arranging everything from simple maintenance to major extensions.

Condition surveys

A condition report is a vital tool in any planned maintenance strategy as it highlights any defects, problems or potential dangers that might exist.

The report is based on a visual inspection of all main elements of the property and serves as an effective tool for forecasting future maintenance costs. Our user-friendly reports systematically cover all key elements of the building, identifying any problems and providing professionally estimated costs for repairs and refurbishment.

All works are prioritised to help you plan and implement repairs & refurbishment in the most effective way. The report can provide peace of mind that the property has no immediate or underlying problems.

Building design & specification

Hookway has over 40 years' experience of designing and specifying buildings for the education sector. Projects range from minor component renewal to design of new-build schools. We approach all projects with the same level of dedication, working carefully with clients to help realise their aspirations. Our practical approach helps mitigate risk and maximise value.

We have a proven track record for developing innovative yet functional designs that meet our clients’ brief and budget. Our highly detailed specifications are tailored from scratch for each project, allowing for detailed pricing to ensure best value. This is much appreciated by our clients and the level of detail has proved indispensable for good cost management throughout projects.

Project management

Our project management helps ensure that everything runs smoothly and that the works are delivered on brief, on time and on budget. In the initial stages we can ensure that the client’s brief is clearly established and is at the heart of the project. We can assist in the selection of the appropriate design team to build on the brief and establish time, cost & quality benchmarks. Our aim is always to integrate the client’s value objectives and ensure that their aims can be achieved.

Our expert team will ensure the production of appropriate tender documents to allow competitive tenders. We will also help to identify they right contractors to deliver the project and produce the best possible outcome. During construction we will establish an integrated framework for the construction & design teams, keeping the Client informed and involved throughout the construction phase and ensuring the smooth flow of information between all parties. Our expertise in monitoring the building process allows us to ensure that the project is completed on time. This can include managing any required changes to the project, whilst keeping the client’s brief at heart and ensuring sound financial management throughout.

Quantity surveying & cost management

During the construction phase of a project, various matters can arise that in some way alter either the cost, programme, or quality of the works - often it is a combination of more than one factor. The timely, methodical and detailed monitoring and reporting of all potential and realised costs in relation to a project is key in enabling timely decisions to be made by all parties to minimise any impact, or maximise any benefit, to the project.

Cash-flow is often key in the successful running of a company or individual project; this is especially true if the project relies on phased delivery of funding. Hookway is able to provide estimated cash flows for all types of construction project to help ensure that income & expenditure can be successfully planned and managed. Once works are underway the cash-flow can be updated and monitored throughout the project to track actual costs and revise future estimates for improved financial understanding.

Construction Health & safety

Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 the role of the CDM Co-ordinator (CDM-C) has been replaced by the ‘Principal Designer’ role. The Principal Designer must have an understanding of how health and safety is managed during the design process and must possess the skills to oversee and co-ordinate health and safety during the pre-construction phase and through any ongoing design. Hookway's highly experienced consultancy team provides comprehensive contract administration services and, in that capacity, can act as the Principal Designer for a very broad range of projects.

Under the new regulations, the lead designer on a project might assume the role of Principal Designer. However, not every designer will feel that they have the relevant knowledge, training and experience to discharge these duties. This is where our previous experience as CDM Coordinators comes into play: we have developed an ‘Advisor to Principal Designer’ service to address this specific need. In this capacity we will ensure that all duties and obligations under CDM 2015 are properly fulfilled, whilst ensuring that creativity and design innovation remain unbridled.

Servicing and compliance

You are accountable for the safe and legal undertaking of building works conducted at your facilities. Whether it’s working with asbestos and ensuring appropriateness of safety procedures, passing building control or meeting specific building regulations, neglecting your responsibilities can have serious consequences. We can ensure this doesn’t happen and that every aspect of your project is conducted legally and safety, every time.

We understand that working with schools and colleges requires special consideration, with additional working restrictions, safeguarding and sector specific legislation all commonplace. Hookway can meet your requirements and get work underway with a minimum of fuss.

Emergency repairs

We can arrange a 24-hour emergency call-out service, working with building and mechanical & electrical contractors able to provide a rapid response to emergency works such as broken windows or blocked drains, electrical failure or storm damage. We only use tried and tested partners, who can be trusted to deliver a reliable and cost effective service, so you can be assured peace of mind.

Space Audits

We understand school buildings and how education is delivered within them. We are passionate about creating and maintaining the best possible learning environments. As student numbers increase, finding space to accommodate additional pupils can be a challenge. We know that schools do not always have the funds available to invest in new development. A space audit can reveal hidden opportunities to develop, improve or re-purpose existing areas to achieve better use of the available space. We have used this approach on numerous occasions to improve teaching & learning facilities within schools & colleges.
