Refurbishing and modernisation of historic roofs

Bristol Cathedral Choir School is located in the heart of historic Bristol. The School was largely developed in the C16th when, after the dissolution of the monasteries, King Henry VIII made provision for the School to continue within the old monastic buildings.

The challenge

The School’s earlier buildings are now in the ownership of the Cathedral, whose built environment dates from the C12th. Worsening roof leaks affecting these buildings gave rise to a need for refurbishment and modernisation of the roofs. However, the religious, cultural and historic significance of the estate would require a considered approach to ensure the best outcome.

The solution

Hookway was appointed to secure project funding on behalf of the School, drawing together all available evidence to support the application. Following a successful bid, Hookway designed the refurbishment and renewal works, applying conservation philosophy to ensure that the significance of the buildings was protected and enhanced. Particular emphasis was given to protection of the historic fabric, selection of new materials and application of appropriate construction methods. Collaboration thereafter included full project management, including heritage & planning consultancy and contract administration, with specialist craftsmen drafted in to undertake the works.

The result

The project successfully delivered full and partial re-roofing of several of the School’s historic buildings. All major parts of the historic fabric were saved, including an English Oak roof, and newly-applied materials were in keeping with the original construction. Hookway continues to support the School in the care and management of its historic estate.

Testimonial

“This year we had two bids totalling over a one million pounds for Lawn Manor. Our new boilers and plant, and new roof projects have gone completely smoothly, safely and within budget.”

“The whole project was entirely ‘self-sufficient’ as far as the school leaders were concerned, apart from pre-agreed meetings/decisions along the way, and the building was completed to a very high spec in a safe and efficient way. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hookway to other schools.”

“Everyone at Hookway has been great to work with. They have worked closely with us to ensure that every last detail has been agreed and implemented. Thank you - we look forward to working with you again!”
