Complete washroom upgrade for South Gloucestershire's largest secondary school

Winterbourne Academy, the largest secondary school in South Gloucestershire, prides itself on its first-class facilities and the learning environment it provides for its students. Although the majority of the school was rebuilt in 2014 there were several areas that were not included in the rebuild.

The Olympus Academy Trust, on behalf of the school, enlisted Hookway to redesign, specify and project manage the refurbishment of the washrooms in the older part of the school.

The challenge

The existing layout consisted of two adjacent washrooms with fixtures and fittings which were no longer functioning and/or meeting current standards. As the facilities were unusable, it meant the rooms were permanently ‘out of order’.

The Solution

Hookway appointed Anna Roderick as the surveyor to meet with the clients, obtain their requirements and undertake the works. From January to April 2018, Hookway worked closely with the Winterbourne Academy to implement an update that worked for them and their students. The new design was agreed to be an open plan, communal washroom increasing the number of available cubicles from seven to twelve. A central wash trough with integrated taps and soap dispensers was also installed, improving the functionality and circulation space.

In addition, hygienic wall cladding, vinyl floor covering and a suspended ceiling grid was added to provide easily maintained internal finishes and LED lighting panels.

Following a thorough tender procedure, Auger Contracts were awarded the contract and carried out the works to a high standard and to the satisfaction of the employer.

The result

The upgraded washroom is now open for use by the school and the new and improved environment has been warmly received by the staff and students.

Simon Hyett, Operations Manager (Premises) at Olympus Academy Trust said; "The new washroom facilities have significantly improved the internal environment and Hookway have been on-hand to efficiently project manage these works to our satisfaction."
