Hardenhuish school

Hookway was appointed to prepare and bid for government Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) to replace the slates and leadwork to the Grade II* listed mansion house that is the heart of this exceptional school property. The funding bid was successful and we also obtained grant funding to recover a large area of felt roofing and replace large glazed screens to the kitchen and octagonal dining hall.

The challenge

Far too large a project for the summer break, the school had to remain in operation for much of the contract.  With sensitive teaching space on the third floor directly beneath the working area we were faced with a number of health and safety challenges. The slates and lead lined perimeter walkways to the mansion house all had to be replaced by specialist contractors with the conservation officer taking a keen interest.

The solution

Hookway was appointed as project managers and principal designers on the project. We specified the roofing work and included a waterproof temporary roof, full scaffolding and internal protection. Careful management ensured that all works were completed on time and on budget with very little inconvenience to the school. The school holidays were utilised at the start of the project and not a single moment of teaching time was lost after the holidays, when the contractors were on site for a further six weeks.

The result

The new Welsh slate roofs look and perform fantastically and the mansion is now set to flourish for another 300 years. The newly insulated kitchen and dining hall roofs and double glazed screens have made a huge improvement to the building performance.

“After a fantastic refurbishment of our Grade II* listed building roof last year, Hookway has excellently project managed a complete transformation of our asbestos roofs”.

Testimonial

“The new building has been open for over a year and teachers and pupils are still excited about it. It is so well designed in terms of light, space and ventilation that it is a joy to work in. The projecting roof at each end creates fantastic covered play space.”
