Hayesfield Girls’ School is a thriving state school located close to the centre of the City of Bath. The school, which has 1,200 students, is located across two campuses, Brougham Hayes and Upper Oldfield Park.

The Senior Leadership Team of the school was looking to apply for CIF funding to carry out refurbishment work on the Brougham Hayes campus and Hookway was recommended to help them through the process. We surveyed the buildings to produce a prioritised list of work required, then having discussed various options, recommended that the school submit two separate CIF bids - one for upgrading their washrooms and one for necessary roof repairs. Our team prepared and submitted the two applications and both bids were subsequently approved and funding secured to carry out the work in 2018.

Updating and refurbishment work

One project consisted of replacing Hayesfield’s washrooms and installing state of the art new ones. The new washrooms have modern trough-style basins that run the length of the wall with touch sense taps. We also refurbished the adjoining changing rooms as part of this project. The other project, a straight-forward roof replacement, was implemented in tandem with work being carried out on the washrooms.

Works planned to minimise disruption to school

This was a sizeable project, none-the-less all work was completed over the summer holidays, keeping any disruption to the students and teaching staff to an absolute minimum. The handover was conducted in early September in time for the start of the new school year.

Full project management and cost control

Hookway’s quantity surveyors and building surveyors worked in collaboration to manage costs and oversee and co-ordinate works from start to finish. This included liaising with the specialist contractors to ensure that work progressed in-line with our planned schedule. Careful control throughout ensured that the project was completed in a timely manner, within the agreed budget and that all work was carried out to a very high standard.

The new roof is in place and the new washrooms are in service. These are smart, light and airy and the students are delighted to have such new modern facilities at their disposal.

Business Manager, Michelle Sims, said: “Everyone at Hookway has been great to work with. They have worked closely with us to ensure that every last detail has been agreed and implemented. Thank you - we look forward to working with you again!
