Transforming school buildings through refurbishment

St Peters High School is a large Secondary Academy with a significant amount of original 1960`s asbestos clad teaching blocks, which are now in poor condition and visually very uninspiring. Rebuilding or refurbishment was required.

The challenge

The Governors and senior management had always considered that funding would become available to demolish and completely rebuild the old buildings at the top of the site and plans were drawn up. However, funding was illusive and the school buildings continued to deteriorate, creating a poor environment for students and staff. Hookway were consulted and after reviewing funding options, it was apparent that the best way forward would be for the Academy to begin a programme of refurbishment of the old blocks, for which funding was available.

The solution - CIF Funding

Hookway was appointed to prepare a bid for government Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) to refurbish the 12 classroom English Block and the bid was successful. Hookway were appointed as cost consultants and project managers for the project and worked with Graham Rivers Architects to produce a cost effective scheme that transformed the look and feel of the building.

The result

The English Block has been transformed from a run down 1960`s classroom block to a modern block which looks likea new building. Thermal and acoustic properties have been improved ensuring an improved environment for learning.  The job was completed on time and on budget. The school are now continuing with the refurbishment of other blocks.

A highly successful design and architectural project.”

“Our old sports hall has now been transformed into a multi-purpose performance space with a professional stage lighting and sound rig. What a transformation! Tom Bishop from Hookway listened very carefully to our requirements and then went about designing the new Norton Hill Arts Theatre.
