Project Overview
Hookway Partnership LLP were appointed to deliver refurbishment works to modular teaching accommodation at Thurlbear Primary School.
The project focused on improving the condition, performance and usability of existing buildings, extending their lifespan and providing better-quality learning environments for pupils and staff.
The Challenge
The existing modular buildings required significant upgrades to address condition issues and ensure they remained fit for purpose.
Key challenges included:

The project also required careful planning around site safety, access and safeguarding due to the occupied nature of the school.

Close collaboration between the school, contractor and design team ensured that the programme was carefully managed, with key works scheduled during holiday periods to minimise disruption.
Scope of Works
The scheme included a combination of demolition, refurbishment and upgrade works, including:
- Refurbishment of modular teaching blocks
- Internal reconfiguration to improve layout and usability
- Upgrades to building services and finishes
- External works to improve access and security
- Roof refurbishment, including installation of a new waterproofing system
The roofing works incorporated a high-performance bituminous waterproofing system designed to improve durability and weather resistance.
