Block Rebuild - Ashcombe Primary School

Ashcombe Primary School, a thriving educational establishment in Weston-super-Mare, was constructed 1969.

A condition survey, completed by Hookway in 2018, led to major concerns around the suitability, condition and safety of the schools two large teaching blocks and we were appointed to assist with putting plans in place to replace the two blocks. Designs were drawn up for a replacement building as an extension, allowing the block to remain operational throughout construction and avoiding the need for temporary classrooms, and planning was granted in 2019.

Overcoming the Funding Challenge

Despite evidencing high need, the initial applications for CIF Funds were rejected on the basis that the school had not actually closed. We persevered, and funding was eventually obtained in 2022 through a successful ‘Urgent Capital Support’ bid.

The funding was granted on the basis that Hookway would further develop the design and the school appointed us to act as its Employer’s Agent, Project Manager and Principal Designer under the CDM regulations.

Hookway is proud to have supported and managed this project through from inception and will continue to do so through to final completion.

The new extension will ultimately achieve ‘BREEAM Excellent’, providing the school with a new entrance reception, offices, 6 classrooms, toilets, a new hall and kitchen servery to replace the condemned blocks... read full case study
