Proud of our historic roots

Hookway was founded in Bristol in 1950 as S.W. Hookway & Company. Hookway was initially a quantity surveying practice which immediately began to work on school and ecclesiastical buildings throughout the south west, developing the expertise which became the company’s trademark.

By the 1980’s the practice's pre-eminence in dealing with the Department for Education meant it was the preferred quantity surveyor for the local Church of England Dioceses of Bristol and Bath and Wells together with the Diocese of Clifton whom it had worked for since the inception of the business.

Expanding our offering

In the mid 1980’s the practice were becoming increasingly involved in the maintenance of the schools which had been built in the 1950’s and 60’s. The company developed an asset management department, which not only carried out maintenance work on schools but also extended into maintenance and improvement of social housing. In 1990 we were engaged to provide surveying services to the Diocese of Bristol’s vicarages covering over 130 properties in the area.  Alongside this expansion the practice continued to provide a quantity surveying function for a number of clients including the Property Services Agency, Wiltshire County Council, Avon County Council, Northavon District Council, Bristol City Council and Gloucester and Salisbury Diocese.

In the mid 1990’s the practice amalgamated with Henry Vale to form Vale and Hookway and extended its services to include Project Management and Construction Health & Safety with contracts throughout England. The practice became involved in projects in the North and the Midlands, as well as the South West of England.

Testimonial

“We have just had two new class rooms constructed for our school and Hookway managed the whole project, which really took the pressure off me. They were brilliant, managing the contractors and making sure that we were all kept fully informed as the project progressed, with all updates given in a timely manner.”

“The new washroom facilities have significantly improved the internal environment and Hookway have been on-hand to efficiently project manage these works to our satisfaction.”

“We had to prepare and construct additional facilities, within two terms, to accommodate a child with severe and profound needs. The initial task seemed totally overwhelming, however Hookway took on the role of project managing the nearly £100,000 extension and enabled school life to continue with very few changes. ”
