Client: Roundwood Park School

Project: Condition Improvement Fund Support

Contract: £1.9m over five years

Roundwood Park School is a mixed, 11-18 secondary school with academy status situated in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Opened in 1956, it currently has around 1,350 pupils, most of whom live in the local area and surrounding villages.

In 2018 Redwood recognised that it needed to carry out a number of upgrades to its facilities, in order to provide the best possible teaching environment for pupils. The school appointed Hookway to compile several Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) applications to improve boilers & heating systems, fire compliant doors, safer access routes and upgraded washrooms.

Following successful CIF Applications, funding was achieved allowing the school to carry out the required upgrades and between 2019 to 2023 Hookway has been helping them implement these essential improvements.

2019: CIF Funding for Pupil Washroom Refurbishment

Funding was initially granted to reconfigure, refurbish and refresh the pupil toilets across the school site. All aspects of the design, specification and tendering process were completed by Hookway, along with comprehensive project management.

The remodelled washrooms have provided a modern, safe and functional solution to a previously poor condition area. The open handwashing stations were also a very useful asset during Covid.

2020: CIF Funding for Fire Safety Improvements

Over 120 single and double door sets were replaced with fully compliant fire doors to classrooms, corridors, library and offices. A brand new fully addressable L1 compliant fire alarm system was also installed across multiple teaching buildings.

In addition, compartmentation to emergency exit routes was completed along with installation of direction fire signage.

2021: CIF Funding for Safeguarding Improvements

Hookway redesigned the main school entrance vehicle access routes in order to improve traffic management and overall site safety.

A new sliding gate was subsequently installed along with fully automated entry and exit gates. The rear boundary and pedestrian side access gates were also upgraded to meet current safety standards.

2022: CIF Funding for Gas Boiler Replacement

This project involved the removal and upgrade of the original failing boiler and control panel. The CIF funds allowed for the installation of modern, efficient and reliable boilers, along with new controls and all associated pipework.

2023: Heating Pipework Replacement

A number of spaces within the school will benefit from an improved, sustainable and reliable heating system. This is the result of replacing the defective leaking distribution pipework throughout main teaching blocks including replacement fan convectors and radiators to ensure the entire newly installed heating system is operating at optimal efficiency and considerably reducing energy bills.
