The challenge

Pewsey Vale School is a is a large, mixed secondary school located in Wiltshire. Having been constructed in the 1960s, the building now requires regular work to maintain a good state of repair and provide a comfortable and pleasant learning environment for students. Securing Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) is critical to the school being able to upgrade the fabric of the building and refurbish facilities. As with many buildings of this age there are often additional Health and Safety challenges associated with carrying out building works.

The solution

Hookway’s qualified building surveyors have both the knowledge and experience to deal with any issues associated with working on buildings from this era. We also have particular expertise in working within the education sector and we know how to plan and manage the required work so as to minimise disruption to teachers and students and ensure their safety throughout.

We have been working with Pewsey Vale School for many years, including helping them apply for and secure CIF. We have achieved funding for the school over five consecutive years, enabling them to implement much needed work to improve both their buildings and facilities. This includes; renewing flat roof coverings to several teaching blocks, installation of curtain-walling glazing and replacing existing windows and doors to improve the buildings performance and enhance the overall aesthetics.

The result

Our most recent project was to refurbish the school’s washrooms and changing rooms. All work took place over the summer holidays so as to minimise disruption to the students and staff and the handover meeting was completed in early September ready for the start of the new school year.

Our team has co-ordinated the whole project from start to completion, including managing the builders and suppliers and overseeing the project timeline. Our involvement helped ensure that the project was completed in a timely manner, within the agreed budget and to a high standard throughout.

The modern new facilities look smart and fresh and have been well received by pupils and members of staff. Deborah Clarke, the Bursar at Pewsey Vale said;

‘Hookway have been consistent in successfully obtaining funding via CIF for the past five years and this has transformed many areas of the school to include the roofs, windows, washrooms and changing rooms. Hookway manage the works on site and work closely with myself to suitably co-ordinate and oversee the projects ensuring their successful running and completion’. We handed them responsibility and they delivered a concise and detailed package of information which included everything required to submit to Salix. They made it easy and took it out of our hands. We can happily say that Hookway was crucial to us being successful and we look forward to working with them on the 2nd phase of application. ”
