Working for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Hookway is delighted to be working for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on their historic headquarters in London – One Birdcage Walk
One Birdcage Walk overlooks St James's Park and is just minutes from the Houses of Parliament and Horse Guards Parade. Designed by architect Basil Slade in 'Queen Anne’ style, it was officially opened in 1899 as the headquarters for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers having been purpose built for the job. The architectural style of the building was, at the time, nicknamed 'streaky bacon' because of the mix of white Portland stone and red brick. It is now regarded as one of the finest examples of traditional architecture in Westminster.
One Birdcage Walk now requires some ongoing maintenance to ensure that the building remains looking it’s best in years to come. Hookway has been appointed as quantity surveyors on the scheme which involves repairs to external façade, roofing and lead works, stone repairs and the refurbishment of balconies, rainwater goods and balustrades.
The location and age of the building present the team with some exciting challenges and we are extremely proud to be associated with such a high-profile project. The amazing views from the rooftop, overlooking this iconic London cityscape, certainly help to make our work all-the-more worthwhile.
